The King Post truss system is one of the most trusted and strongest roof styles. Instead of relying on horizontal support systems, like rafters and cross beams, king posts extend vertically from these supports to the apex of the truss. King posts connect the apex to the base of the truss, holding up the tie beam. Originally developed by the Romans, king post truss systems were most prominently featured in barns and churches. They also appear in Gothic Revival architecture, as well as the period of Queen Ann style. King Post truss systems are often the saviors of many structural problems, as they add much needed support to the load-bearing roof. Optional support webs can accentuate the vertical column. Curved rafters can give the king post extra support and accentuate traditional facades. King essentially tie together all components of a timber truss system. They are economical in that they rely on a singular post in providing the greatest amount of support without sacrificing structural integrity.
